What is Existential Therapy?
Existential therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the deeper questions of human life: meaning, choice, freedom, responsibility, and the inevitability of change. Rather than viewing distress as a symptom to be “fixed,” existential therapy sees it as a natural response to the challenges of being human.
This approach helps clients explore how they relate to themselves, others, and the world. It emphasizes personal agency: the idea that we always have the capacity to make choices, even in difficult circumstances, and that these choices shape the direction of our lives.
An existential therapist works collaboratively with clients, helping them clarify their values, confront fears, and cultivate a more authentic, meaningful way of living. Sessions often explore themes such as identity, purpose, relationships, anxiety, loss, and the tension between freedom and responsibility.
Existential therapy does not offer one-size-fits-all techniques. Instead, it offers a space for reflection, honesty, and self-understanding so that clients can live more consciously and intentionally. It's well suited to those seeking deeper insight into themselves and to anyone navigating life transitions, existential concerns, or a desire for personal growth.
